Official requirement
The U.S. Department of State requires a plain white or off-white background with no shadows, texture or lines, taken within the last 6 months.
This applies to both passport and visa photos. The background rule exists so automated systems and officials can clearly distinguish your head outline.
PassportSelf tip: easy white backgrounds at home
A blank interior wall, a white door, a white sheet pulled taut, or white poster board all photograph as compliant backgrounds.
- Tape white poster board to a wall at head height — the cheapest reliable option.
- Iron or stretch a white sheet so folds don't create shadow lines.
- Avoid glossy surfaces that reflect light unevenly.
- Make sure nothing else (frames, switches, furniture) appears behind you.

PassportSelf tip: lighting to avoid shadows
Face a window with indirect daylight and stand about a foot in front of the background — most background shadows disappear with those two changes.
- Best light: daytime, facing a window, sun not shining directly on you.
- Avoid single overhead lights — they cast shadows under the chin and behind the head.
- Avoid flash close to a wall — it creates a hard outline shadow.

Why not just edit the background white?
U.S. rules prohibit digitally altered photos, and background replacement is a common reason applications get sent back.
PassportSelf deliberately does not offer background removal or AI editing. Crop, size and position — nothing that changes the photograph itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does a passport photo have to have a white background?
For U.S. passports and visas, yes — plain white or off-white with no shadows, texture or lines. Some other countries accept light grey or cream; always check the issuing agency's rule.
Can I digitally replace the background?
No for U.S. documents — the photo must not be digitally altered. Take the photo against a real white background instead. PassportSelf never edits or replaces backgrounds.
My wall is beige — is that OK?
Off-white is acceptable for U.S. photos. Distinctly colored walls (blue, green, beige-brown) are not. Hanging a white sheet or poster board is an easy fix.
How do I avoid shadows?
Stand at least a foot away from the wall and face soft, even light such as a window. Shadows appear when light comes from above or behind you at an angle.
