How 4×6 printing works

Your passport photos are placed on a single 4×6 image, which prints as an ordinary — and inexpensive — standard 4×6 photo.

Most photo services don't offer a dedicated 2×2 print size, but virtually all of them print 4×6 photos. PassportSelf lays out multiple correctly sized copies on one 4×6 sheet with cutting guides. See how the 4×6 passport sheet works.

How to avoid cropping

Order a plain 4×6 print and decline every cropping, auto-fit or enhancement option.

The sheet leaves PassportSelf at exactly the right dimensions. The only thing that can change the photo size is the printing step — cropping, "fill frame" and zoom options all resize the image.

Print at actual size

The print scale must be 100% / actual size — never 'fit to page'.

  • Print size: exactly 4×6.
  • Scale: 100% / original / actual size.
  • Photo paper, highest quality setting.
  • Borderless only if it doesn't stretch the image.

Cutting instructions

Cut along the printed guides with scissors or a paper cutter — each photo must measure exactly 2 × 2 inches for U.S. documents.

Measure one photo with a ruler before submitting. If it isn't exact, reprint with resizing disabled rather than trimming to fit.

Common print-size mistakes

Nearly all wrong-size prints come from the print settings, not the file.

  • Ordering a print size other than 4×6.
  • Letting the kiosk or app crop or "improve" the image.
  • Printing on plain paper instead of photo paper.
  • Not measuring a printed photo before submitting it.

Printing through local retailers

Frequently asked questions

Where can I print a passport photo near me?

Any photo-printing service that prints standard 4×6 photos can print the PassportSelf sheet — pharmacy photo counters, supermarket photo centers, and home photo printers all work. PassportSelf is not affiliated with any photo retailer.

What size print do I order?

A standard 4×6 photo print. The sheet already contains correctly sized passport-photo copies, so no special passport print product is needed.

Why did my photos print at the wrong size?

A print setting resized the image — usually "fit to page", "fill frame" or automatic cropping. Reprint the 4×6 file at original / actual size.

Do I have to print at all?

Only if your application requires a physical photo. Online applications use the digital file, which PassportSelf also provides.
